“Swing Low Sweet Chariot,” the popular Negro spiritual, was first recorded in 1909 by the Fisk Jubilee.  According to Wikipedia the song was “first written by Wallis Willis, a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, sometime before 1862.
